Every year there are dozens of trade shows and bridal shows that vendors have the opportunity to showcase their skills. These shows are meant to bring vendors and potential new clients together and to make a personal connection between the two. This is a time where vendors are able to showcase their talent on a large scale. Due to the cost of participating in a show, it is imperative that vendors make the most out of each interaction. Through the years, we have compiled a list of do’s and don’ts when at a show:

  • Stay off your phone.  Nothing says “you’re not worth my time” like ignoring a passing attendee because you were on your phone, tablet, or computer. This act alone makes you unapproachable.
  • Avoid Sitting. We know; they are long days and at some points there are slower periods, and all you want to do is get off your feet. Avoid this whenever possible. Bring three pairs of shoes if you have to, but try not to sit down. It looks unprofessional and again makes you unapproachable.
  • Don’t be Pushy. Going directly into a hard sell will not get you far. Have a conversation before you talk about your services and make a personal connection. If you make a connection, then move into what you can offer them. This approach will make a better impression than simply talking about yourself.
  • Make yourself approachable. For an attendee, the process of talking to strangers can seem awkward. You need to do what you can to make yourself approachable which includes smiling, making eye contact, and being the first one to engage the conversation.
  • Think outside of the box. Do something different at your booth. Have a drawing or a giveaway or have cool prop they can take a picture next to that attracts people. Ask yourself when prepping for a show, “why will people stop at this booth” because your dazzling smile isn’t going to cut it.
  • Provide Takeaways. If the attendee walks away with nothing in their hand with your information on it, then you are now just a distant memory. They are meeting 50-100 other vendors that day, without a takeaway you will not be remembered. Get clever with these! Brochures and business cards will get lost and forgotten. But a pen, CD, or sewing kit will actually get used.
  • Make your booth visually appealing. Go beyond the provided linen and 6 foot table. This is your time to shine and showcase your abilities. Someone passing by should instantly know what you do without ever reading your logo.
  • Be willing to hire. This is probably the most important factor to a successful show. If you are not a natural sales person, hire someone that is, even if it is just for the day. All you need someone that is approachable and knows enough about your area of expertise. They don’t need to be a complete expert because that is what you are. Know your weaknesses and spend the $100 to potentially land a client that you might not have gotten without that new sales person.
